A retired Acting Director of the NYSC, Mr Adeniran Olayide has described corps members as the back bone and custodians of our country Nigeria.
He said this during his motivational lecture delivered to 2021 Batch 'B' stream 2 corps members at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp Iseyin, Oyo State.
The Acting Director (rtd) , said it is undebatable that the youth of a Nation whether developed or underdeveloped are regarded as custodians of its future.
Mr Adeniran who expressed his delight at the level of the corps members discipline and compliance to all the covid-19 safety protocols, said the effort of the NYSC Oyo Management is highly commendable .
He stated that the establishment of the scheme in 1973 was to foster common purpose, National unity, and service to the nation.
He described the Scheme as a change agent, and therefore charged the corps members to create an indelible mark in sustaining the threatened unity. He said " we need one another to have a meaningful existence".
The Rtd Acting Director stated that the impact of the scheme on corps members begins right from the Orientation Camp, where they are trained physically and mentally on leadership qualities as well as good moral conduct expected of a responsible citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
He further encouraged the corps members to develop the spirit of perseverance, tolerance, team work, hard work, patriotism, discipline and humility to sharpen their leadership skills.
Elder Adeniran also implored the corps members to key into Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme, which is aimed at developing and empowering them with the basic skills needed to set up businesses of their own after the service year.
He equally charged the corps members to live a long lasting landmark in the memories of their host Communities, through the Community Development Service (CDS).
Earlier in her welcome address, the NYSC Oyo State Coordinator,Mrs Grace Ogbuogebe, said it was an honor to receive the retired Acting Director, who served meritoriously until his retirement.
" Indeed, the NYSC Scheme without mincing word is a laudable change agent that has brought positive change to the society in all ramifications" she said.
The SC enjoined the corps members to concentrate and be ready to grasp every point as lesson for life.
Meanwhile, The National Youth Service Corps in collaboration with funding Institutions, sensitized the 2021 Batch B stream 2 corps members on their operations during the SAED lecture series at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp Iseyin.
The essence of the lecture as stated by the financial institutions was to prepare the corps members adequately for self employment during and after their service year.
Mr Sadiq Ajayi , from the Central Bank of Nigeria, said the funding is established with the aim of reducing dependence and search for white collar jobs after their service year.
He lauded the NYSC Scheme for creating the platform through Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme, he added that every serving corps member in each batch is eligible to soft loans with Certificate of National Service as the only collateral.He however hinted that before any loan can be granted corps members must have a written business plan with direction and sustainability strategies.
Equally, Mrs Ogunmefun Foluke , from the Bank of Industry urged the corps members to make good use of the golden opportunity NYSC Scheme has provided through Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme. She informed them that the Bank of Industry has created a training session for serving corps members in the following areas;how to write a business plan, how to become an entrepreneur, how to generate business ideas and other key ingredients for growing businesses.
Mrs Folake also disclosed that the loan available to corps members is interest free and they can access up to 3million naira.
Mr Adelusi Victor, from the Standard Organization of Nigeria, said he was happy that NYSC's presence can be felt in all the nooks and crannies of the country and SON collaboration with NYSC would afford corps members the opportunity to create more awareness to the public on its operations.
He listed their activities which include, Certification of industrial products, Assistant in the production of quality goods and dissemination of information relating to standards.
He tasked the corps members to help in the sensitization of the populace in their various places of primary assignment, stating that it would assist SON in realizing its objectives especially in the reduction of the production of fake and substandard goods .
