The Federal Government through the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation has partnered the Ondo State Government on capacity building of managers of public finance across the state on International Public Sector Accounting System (IPSAS).
This is contained in a statement by the Media Manager of the state Ministry of Finance, Mr Banjo Egunjobi, on Wednesday in Akure.
The workshop theme is “ Continuous Capacity Building on IPSAS.”
Mr Wale Akinterinwa, the state Commissioner for Finance, who declared the 3-day training workshop open in Akure, said that implementation of IPSAS would greatly improve the quality of government financial reporting, transparency and accountability.
Akinterinwa noted that the IPSAS had provided a reliable decision making in governance and management of scarce resources.
According to him, the adoption and implementation of Accrual Basis of IPSAS adds value and makes government more accountable to the citizens,
He said that the training was apt for the joint 'Open Government Partnership' which demanded a high level of responsibility, accountability and fiscal transparency driven by implementation of IPSAS Accrual basis.
The Commissioner, who expressed gratitude to the state governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, for creating conducive environment for capacity development of the state accounting managers to standardize the state finance and accounting process to meet the best global practices.
He, therefore, encouraged all the participants to pay rapt attention to the lecture and participate fully to maximize the resources deployed to acquire modern day accounting system in line with global best practices.
In his remarks, the Accountant General of the Federation, Mr Sylva Okolieaboh, noted that the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on July 28, 2010 took decision to adopt and implement the provisions of IPSAS by public sector entities (PSE) in Nigeria.
Represented by Mr Olasunkanmi Adeoti, the Deputy Programme Manager of System Development, Accountant General Office in Abuja, Okolieaboh explained that since the implementation of IPSAS in the country all stakeholders had constantly been encouraged and provided with necessary support in form of capacity building across the Federal, State and Local Government for seamless implementation .
In her remarks, the State Accountant-General, Mrs Toyin Oni, expressed optimism that the three- day workshop would provide an overview of important requirements for preparation of financial statements as well as advance the knowledge of participants.
Oni also assured that the programme would go a long way to enhancing the efficiency of the participants in the preparation of financial statements in line with global best practices at their various offices.
She, therefore, encouraged the participants to fully participate in the capacity building to justify the kind gesture of the Accountant General of the Federation for extending the workshop to the state.
Goodwill messages were delivered by the State Auditor-General, Mr Sunday Adegoke, the Local Government Auditor-General, Mr Francis Aderomola and the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance, Mr Jide Ekpobomini, and other important dignitaries.
