A prominent socio-cultural organisation in Nigeria, Yoruba Welfare Group has condemned Pa Ayo banjo for showing strong support for the Labour Party Presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi.
The National President of the YWG, Comrade Abdulhakeem Adegoke Alawuje made the condemnation in a press statement made available to journalists on Thursday.
Chief Ayo Adebanjo, acting leader of another Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, had said in an interview with Punch newspaper on Friday that, he is now good friends with former President Olusegun Obasanjo as a result of their mutual support for the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi; noting that their shared support for Obi has seen them join forces.
It will be recalled that Obasanjo, Adebanjo, Obi and others had earlier in the week paid a condolence visit to the family of the late Minister of Aviation, Mbazulike Amechi, who died at 93 on November 1, 2022.
Adebanjo was quoted to have said, “What unites us is Nigeria. All the time I disagreed with him (Obasanjo), there was no personal issue. It was on this issue of Nigeria and we agree it should be better. We all agreed that Obi is the man. That is why we are friends. And that was what we made clear to the people of the East. It was the question of Nigeria and we were able to demonstrate the importance of Obi’s victory in the election. Even people who do not agree on things agree on this one.”
Despite the unprecedented achievements in infrastructure and renewed fight against corruption, Adebanjo described the Buhari administration as the “worst” Nigeria has had in the past two decades, the group said.
Alawuje however disagreed with Adebanjo alleging him of taking side with Obi.
He said, "Your plan to clandestinely use Afenifere platform to achieve personal agenda, and thereby shortchange Yoruba land in the favor of your biological mother land will backfire in a big way.
"You and all your collaborators will surely be disappointed in Yoruba land and all your phyrric gain under Afenifere will rise up against you and your family".
YWG president, however, challenged Adebanjo to a public debate on the impacts and achievements of Obi vis a vis the many achievements of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the nation.
