A Public Affairs Analyst, Mr Timileyin Ayenuro, has urged the Inspector General of Police (IG), Kayode Egbetokun, to enhance safety of personnel and officers of Nigeria Police on duty.
Ayenuro in a letter to the IG and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Akure, said there was urgent need for the leadership of the police to guarantee the safety of police personnel on duty.
He said that the idea of policemen hanging on patrol vehicles, endangering their lives, was worrisome and a ridicule to the profession.
“I am writing to respectfully urge the leadership of the Nigeria Police to prioritise the safety and dignity of the personnel and officers on the field.
“It is increasingly common to see police personnel hanging precariously at the back of patrol vans, an unsafe practice that endanger their lives and undermine the image of the force.
“Police work is a noble profession, deserving of respect and proper safety measures.
“Officers and other personnel should not be exposed to unnecessary risks while performing their duties.
“I strongly recommend the enactment of new regulations that ensure all officers are seated safely and securely in patrol vehicles,” Ayenuro said.
The public analyst said that by addressing the safety issue, the Nigeria Police Force would positively continue to uphold the ideals of the profession and demonstrate a commitment to the well-being of its members.
“If the safety of the personnel of the force is assured with other welfare packages, their conduct towards members of the public will be commendable,”Ayenuro said.
