The Nigeria–America Joint Veterans Alliance (NAJVA) has applauded the Minister of Interior, Hon. Bunmi Tunji-Ojo, for what it describes as sweeping, transformative reforms that have repositioned the ministry for efficiency, transparency and enhanced national security.
The commendation was contained in a statement released after the alliance reviewed recent developments and performance indicators across agencies under the ministry.
According to the group, the Minister has demonstrated “exceptional leadership, efficiency, and integrity,” a combination it said has translated into measurable improvements for Nigerians at home and abroad.
NAJVA pointed to what it termed the “historic elimination” of a backlog of over 200,000 passport applications within the Minister’s first three weeks in office.
The alliance said the move restored public confidence and laid the foundation for the ministry’s ongoing digital transformation.
It also praised the automation of passport processes, online applications, and the deployment of e-gates at major airports, saying the initiatives have drastically reduced waiting time and strengthened migration security.
The veterans further highlighted the Interior Ministry’s emergence as a significant revenue-generating institution following policy changes and tighter oversight of expatriate quotas, marriages and citizenship procedures.
The group noted that the ministry generated more than N6 billion in 2024, a 150 per cent rise from the previous year with assurances that the funds were being channelled into infrastructure upgrades, including a new Data Centre and Command-Control facility expected to bolster national security operations.
On welfare and service reforms, NAJVA praised the release of more than 4,000 inmates whose fines were settled, reducing congestion in correctional facilities by around five per cent.
It also commended the approval of 32,000 long-delayed promotions across the agencies under the ministry, describing the exercise as “a morale-booster that reflects responsible leadership.”
It added that new fire engines, the creation of a Fire Service Academy, and the strengthening of the Safe School Initiative were clear signals of a ministry committed to public safety and institutional growth.
NAJVA noted that Tunji-Ojo’s efforts have not gone unnoticed nationally, recalling his Best Performing Minister of 2024 award from the Nigeria Citizen Action Group and his Public Service Person of the Year 2023 recognition by Leadership newspaper.
The group urged the Minister to sustain his commitment to technology-driven governance, border security and service excellence, stressing that his reforms are “not only solving old challenges but building a modern public service system Nigerians can be proud of.”
It reaffirmed its support for the ongoing reforms, insisting that the Minister’s vision aligns with NAJVA’s long-standing advocacy for a safer, better-governed nation for citizens at home and in the diaspora.
