Panic gripped commuters at the NEPA Roundabout in Akure, Ondo State, on Monday morning following a fatal crash involving a timber-laden truck and a motorcycle.
The incident occurred during the early rush hour, sending motorists and pedestrians fleeing as a crowd gathered around the mangled vehicles. The victim was confirmed dead at the scene.
Shortly after, a second accident reportedly happened at the same location, though fortunately, no one was injured.
Olayinka Ayanlade, spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, clarified that only one person lost his life, countering earlier reports suggesting two fatalities.
Residents attributed the accidents to the lack of traffic officers in the area, warning that ongoing construction work has worsened congestion and increased the risk of crashes.
They urged the state government to promptly deploy traffic personnel to prevent further mishaps and ensure commuter safety.
Authorities are continuing investigations to determine the full circumstances surrounding the crashes.
