A Lagos-based caterer, Theresa Sappor, has said her business witnessed a major boost after she prepared Nigerian jollof rice for American online streamer, iShowSpeed, during his recent visit to the state.
Sappor, who runs Sappor Cuisine located inside Freedom Park, Lagos Island, described the experience as life-changing, attributing the success of the moment to divine help and the power of social media.
Speaking in an interview that has since gone viral, the caterer said the jollof rice she prepared for the streamer attracted new customers who had never previously visited the historic park.
“This jollof rice, na Holy Spirit help me cook am. I’m still in shock. Social media get power. Whether we like it or not, Nigerians have good food,” she said.
She recounted how a customer, drawn by the viral video of iShowSpeed eating her jollof rice, visited the restaurant for the first time.
“She said she has never stepped foot into Freedom Park before, but she came because of iShowSpeed. We prepared the jollof rice that iShowSpeed ate when he came to Nigeria,” Sappor said.
Reflecting on her journey, she described herself as a passionate cook who started learning the trade at an early age, adding that catering runs in her family.
“I tell anybody anywhere that I have the best cook in the world. I’ve been cooking since I was 12 years old. My mother-in-law is a caterer, so I went back to it. I really love cooking,” she added.
Her husband and co-founder of the business highlighted the scale of the exposure generated by the livestream, noting that more than one million viewers watched the moment online.
“While he was eating it, over one million people were watching. We also get a lot of expatriates who come here. They ask for egusi and fufu, enjoy it and keep coming back,” he said.
During the livestream at Freedom Park, iShowSpeed praised the Nigerian jollof rice, telling his audience, “I am not gonna lie, this is good. I think I might have to go with Nigeria,” a remark that quickly went viral and reignited the long-standing jollof rivalry.
Expressing gratitude, Sappor described the encounter as a global breakthrough for her brand.
“It has received a global visitation. iShowSpeed, thank you. I know how to cook the best egusi soup too. Thank you for raising people. God will bless you and raise you up,” she said.
During his stay in Lagos, the streamer explored Freedom Park, engaging with dancers, skaters and performers while reacting excitedly to various displays of talent.
iShowSpeed later travelled to Ghana, where he also sampled local jollof rice as part of his Africa tour. After tasting the Ghanaian version, he jokingly maintained his preference for Nigerian jollof, a comment that sparked playful online exchanges between fans from both countries.
The streamer’s Africa tour, which began in December 2025, spans several countries and has drawn massive attention, with his arrival in Lagos attracting crowds of residents who followed his movement through the city.
