Operations across federal universities and inter-university centres are set for disruption from Friday as the Joint Action Committee of NASU and SSANU has confirmed the commencement of an indefinite nationwide strike.
The unions disclosed this in a letter dated April 30, 2026, addressed to the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, citing the Federal Government’s failure to conclude renegotiations and make a fresh offer on outstanding allowances.
The correspondence, jointly signed by NASU General Secretary, Peters Adeyemi, and SSANU President, Mohammed Ibrahim, stated that the industrial action would take effect from midnight on May 1, 2026.
The unions acknowledged the withdrawal of an earlier circular proposing a 30 per cent increase in the Consolidated Non-Teaching Tools Allowance but maintained that the move did not address the core issues in dispute.
They noted that despite the withdrawal, no alternative proposal had been presented by the government to replace the scrapped allowance.
According to the Joint Action Committee, members had earlier directed the leadership to take decisive action if negotiations were not concluded by the end of April.
With talks still inconclusive as of April 30, the unions said the strike had become inevitable.
They added that the decision followed what they described as the government’s failure to avert the crisis through meaningful engagement.
The planned industrial action is expected to ground administrative and support services in federal tertiary institutions nationwide, raising fresh concerns over disruptions in Nigeria’s university system, which has been plagued by recurrent labour disputes.
