A former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has alleged that ex-President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Patience Jonathan, orchestrated his exit from the Peoples Democratic Party.
Amaechi made the claim on Friday during an appearance on The Morning Brief, a breakfast programme on Channels Television.
According to him, the former president and his wife allegedly took control of the political structure in Rivers State, leaving him with no option but to leave the party.
“I was forced out of the PDP after the leadership in the state was taken over. At that point, it became impossible for me to remain,” he said.
The former Rivers State governor, who defected from the PDP in 2013 following his suspension over alleged anti-party activities, also claimed he experienced similar challenges in the All Progressives Congress, which he exited in 2025.
He maintained that he would continue to speak out against perceived injustice, regardless of the consequences.
“I cannot keep quiet in the face of wrongdoing. Each time I speak, there are moves to sideline me politically,” Amaechi added.
Speaking on the 2027 general elections, the chieftain of the African Democratic Congress said he would support former Vice President Atiku Abubakar if he emerges as the party’s presidential candidate.
While acknowledging Atiku’s qualification to contest, Amaechi said broader considerations, including capacity, should guide the choice of candidate.
“He has the right to run, but there are other factors that must be taken into account beyond eligibility,” he stated.
He also downplayed the relevance of zoning in Nigeria’s political arrangement, insisting that competence should take precedence over regional considerations.
“I do not subscribe to divisions based on geography. What matters is allowing capable individuals to emerge and lead,” he said.
