Tragedy struck in the Satellite Town area of Lagos as a 41-year-old man, Uchenna Aghoha, allegedly punched his wife, Esther, to death during a domestic altercation.
Sources told PUNCH Metro that the incident followed a heated argument between the couple, which escalated into violence. The deceased was said to have endured repeated abuse in the marriage prior to the fatal encounter.
A resident familiar with the incident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the suspect allegedly attacked his wife during one of their frequent disputes.
“The argument started like their usual quarrels, but it suddenly turned violent. He punched her, and she collapsed. Their daughter ran out to call for help, but by the time people got there, she was unresponsive,” the source said.
It was gathered that the couple’s 14-year-old daughter later reported the matter to the police.
A police source disclosed that officers were immediately deployed to the scene, while the victim was rushed to the Nigerian Navy Reference Hospital Ojo, where she was confirmed dead by medical personnel.
“The girl came to the station in the afternoon to report the incident. Our men visited the scene and found that the victim had already been taken to the hospital, where she was certified dead,” the source added.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed the development, noting that the suspect had been taken into custody.
She said the remains of the deceased had been deposited at the General Hospital Yaba morgue for autopsy, while the case would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, for further investigation.
Incidents of domestic violence continue to generate concern across Nigeria, with stakeholders urging stricter enforcement of existing laws and increased awareness to protect vulnerable persons.
