The National Democratic Congress has strengthened its ranks with the defection of several political figures, including the wife of music star Innocent Idibia, popularly known as 2Baba, and the Minority Leader of the Edo State House of Assembly.
The National Leader of the party, Senator Seriake Dickson, received the new members on Thursday during a stakeholders’ meeting and reception ceremony held in Abuja.
Among those who formally joined the NDC were the Minority Leader of the Edo State House of Assembly and member representing Ovia North East I Constituency, Charity Aiguobarueghian, and Natasha Osawaru Idibia, who represents Egor Constituency in the state assembly.
Others received into the party were a House of Representatives aspirant for Oredo Federal Constituency, Dr Donald Eboigbe, and former Deputy Governor of Gombe State, Dr John Yoriyo.
The defectors were said to have moved from the Peoples Democratic Party to the NDC amid ongoing political realignments ahead of future elections.
Addressing party members and stakeholders at the event, Dickson urged members to remain committed to strengthening the structures of the party across the country.
He described the NDC as a movement driven by ideology, discipline and internal democracy rather than personal political ambition.
According to him, the party is focused on building a long-term political institution capable of promoting good governance, national unity and inclusive development.
Dickson noted that the National Chairman and members of the National Working Committee were absent from the event due to preparations for the party’s forthcoming national convention scheduled for Saturday.
The former Bayelsa State governor stressed the need for members to operate within established party structures and constitutional provisions at all levels.
He also warned against acts capable of undermining party cohesion, insisting that political parties must be nurtured and sustained through discipline and collective commitment.
“The party remains open to Nigerians who share its vision for good governance, unity and inclusive growth, with strong emphasis on youth and women participation,” he said.
The event also featured the presentation of membership cards to the new entrants, while Dickson urged them to work closely with party leaders in their respective states to strengthen the NDC ahead of future political activities.
