Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has withdrawn from the forthcoming governorship primary of the All Progressives Congress scheduled to hold on Thursday.
Fubara announced his decision in a statement personally signed by him on Wednesday night, saying he would support whoever emerges as the party’s candidate.
The governor explained that his decision followed extensive consultations with family members, political associates and close allies.
According to him, the interest of Rivers State must take precedence over personal ambition.
“After deep reflection and extensive consultations with my family, friends, and associates, I have taken the difficult but necessary decision to withdraw from the APC gubernatorial primaries,” he stated.
“I do so with a full heart and with a firm commitment to support whoever emerges as the candidate of our great party.”
Fubara noted that leadership sometimes requires sacrifice, adding that peace, unity and stability in the state were more important than individual political interests.
He expressed appreciation to his supporters for their loyalty, prayers and sacrifices throughout his political journey, while acknowledging that many of them might feel disappointed by the development.
The governor said his silence in recent weeks was intentional and guided by what he described as the higher interest of the state.
“As our elders say, not everything a hunter sees in the forest is spoken of in the marketplace. Some truths are best borne quietly, not out of fear, but out of wisdom and restraint for the sake of peace and a greater purpose,” he added.
Fubara also thanked the APC leadership for giving him the platform and appreciated President Bola Tinubu for his support and encouragement.
He urged party members and supporters to remain united and committed to the progress of the APC.
The governor further clarified that his withdrawal should not be interpreted as an act of weakness or surrender.
“Let it be clearly understood that I stepped aside not out of weakness, fear, or surrender, but out of conviction and sacrifice so that Rivers State may move forward in peace and unity,” he said.
He reaffirmed his commitment to serving the people of Rivers State until the expiration of his tenure.
