The Federal Road Safety Corps has commenced a large-scale operation to ease traffic congestion and improve road safety in Ondo Town, Ondo State, targeting major gridlock-prone areas across the city.
The exercise, tagged Operation Orange Impact, was launched on Wednesday as part of the corps’ community-focused intervention aimed at restoring order on busy roads.
Leading the operation, the FRSC Unit Commander in Ondo Town, Mr Joseph Ajayi, said the initiative formed part of the agency’s Corporate Social Responsibility efforts and aligns with its broader strategy to strengthen road safety through proactive engagement.
He noted that the intervention was driven by data identifying persistent congestion points, including Sabo, Ife Garage Roundabout and Lipakala Junction.
Ajayi explained that early morning deployment of personnel was designed to ease traffic flow and prevent avoidable accidents along critical corridors.
He added that officials had begun clearing abandoned and accident-damaged vehicles, as well as other obstructions, from major roads to minimise risks to motorists.
According to him, such obstructions often contribute to crashes, especially at night or during poor weather conditions.
The commander disclosed that temporary repairs were also being carried out on damaged sections of roads in collaboration with local stakeholders to reduce accidents caused by potholes, pending full rehabilitation by relevant authorities.
He stressed that the corps was repositioning itself not only as a law enforcement body but also as a responsive partner committed to public safety.
Ajayi assured residents that similar operations would be sustained and expanded into monthly interventions, with increased collaboration involving the Ondo State Ministry of Works and local government councils.
He urged motorists to cooperate with traffic officials and desist from abandoning broken-down vehicles on highways, while encouraging prompt reporting of road obstructions or emergencies through the nearest FRSC office or its toll-free line.
Residents and road users have welcomed the initiative.
A commercial driver, Mr Tijani Olowookere, described the operation as unprecedented, noting that it marked a significant shift in the agency’s engagement with the public.
Similarly, a trader at Sabo Market, Mrs Tolani Adebusuyi, commended the corps for easing congestion, saying the improved traffic flow would help traders move goods more efficiently and reduce losses associated with delays.
