Former Kano State Governor and leader of the Kwankwasiyya political movement, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has named former Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo as the governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 elections.
Kwankwaso also announced ex-Kano Deputy Governor, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, as the party’s candidate for the Kano Central Senatorial District.
The former governor disclosed the development in a statement shared on Friday, saying the party arrived at the decision after broad consultations with stakeholders.
He noted that the emergence of the candidates was anchored on merit, loyalty, justice and dedication to the ideals of the movement.
Kwankwaso described Gwarzo as a committed political ally with years of experience in public service and grassroots mobilisation.
“I am happy to present Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo as the governorship standard-bearer of our party in Kano State for the forthcoming election,” he stated.
He further revealed that Gawuna would represent the party in the race for the Kano Central Senate seat.
According to Kwankwaso, the choices reflected the party’s resolve to strengthen unity and sustain the values upon which the Kwankwasiyya movement was built.
He expressed confidence that the party would record success in the 2027 polls, while praying for a peaceful and hitch-free affirmation exercise.
Gwarzo previously served as deputy governor under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf before stepping down following the political realignments that reshaped Kano politics.
Before occupying the office of deputy governor, he worked as Commissioner for State Affairs during Kwankwaso’s administration and also served as chairman of Gwarzo Local Government Area.
He later joined Kwankwaso in the coalition movement that transitioned from the African Democratic Congress to the Nigeria Democratic Congress.
Gawuna, who was deputy governor during the administration of former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, contested the 2023 governorship election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress.
The former APC governorship candidate recently aligned with Kwankwaso and officially became part of the NDC political structure in Kano.
