A football match organised to promote friendship between Eniwari and Opuama communities in Bayelsa State ended on a tragic note after a young man was allegedly beaten to death following a dispute linked to the game.
The deceased, identified as Thomas Ogbianawei, was said to be from Eniwari community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.
Sources within the area disclosed that tension erupted during the match after players from both sides became involved in an argument that briefly disrupted proceedings.
Although the situation was reportedly brought under control before the end of the encounter, hostility between some supporters of the rival communities allegedly persisted after the game.
Residents said Ogbianawei later crossed paths with some members of the visiting side along the Eniwari-Fonibiri axis while they were leaving the community.
The assailants were said to have recognised him as an indigene of Eniwari and attacked him, inflicting injuries that eventually claimed his life.
News of the killing has thrown residents into mourning and heightened concerns over possible unrest between the neighbouring communities.
Amid rising tension, community leaders have appealed for peace, urging youths to avoid retaliatory actions and allow security agencies to handle the matter.
Reacting to the incident, Chairman of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, Target Segibo, expressed sorrow over the death and sympathised with the victim's family and the people of Eniwari. He also called on residents of both communities to remain calm and avoid actions capable of worsening the situation.
The Bayelsa State Police Command confirmed the incident, with its spokesperson, DSP Musa Mohammed, stating that an investigation had commenced and that one suspect was already in custody in connection with the killing.
