Authorities in Ogun State have launched an investigation into the death of a man identified simply as Success following allegations that he was assaulted by operatives of the So-Safe Corps in Ota.
The deceased was said to have been involved in a family dispute before personnel of the state security outfit intervened and took him away from his residence in the Oju-Ore area.
Residents alleged that the incident began after a disagreement between Success, his mother and his younger sibling on Saturday. During the altercation, he reportedly sustained injuries.
Sources within the community claimed that after being invited to settle the dispute, some So-Safe operatives apprehended the man and removed him from the neighbourhood.
The allegations, which have circulated widely on social media, suggest that the victim was later taken to a secluded location where he was physically assaulted. Community members claimed the injuries he sustained eventually led to his death.
The development sparked reactions online, with some residents accusing the security personnel of exceeding their authority and resorting to unlawful violence.
Speaking on the incident, the spokesperson for the So-Safe Corps, Adegunwa Adegbuyi, confirmed that officers linked to the matter had been transferred to the police for investigation.
He stated that the corps leadership immediately acted after receiving reports of the incident, stressing that the conduct of the personnel involved did not reflect the organisation’s operational standards.
According to him, the officers failed to follow established procedures and instead took actions that were inconsistent with the corps’ rules of engagement.
Adegbuyi noted that the command had no tolerance for human rights violations and would cooperate fully with law enforcement authorities to ensure justice is served.
He added that the suspects were handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The spokesperson further disclosed that the Commandant of the So-Safe Corps, Soji Ganzalo, had repeatedly cautioned officers against abuse of power and involvement in matters beyond their lawful responsibilities.
Efforts to obtain comments from the Ogun State Police Command were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
The incident has renewed concerns over the conduct of security operatives and the need for strict adherence to rules governing arrests and detention.
Investigations are expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the death and whether criminal charges will be filed against those implicated.
