A woman identified as Mary Olatunde has been arrested and arraigned by the Ondo State Police Command for allegedly attacking her husband with a cutlass during a domestic altercation in Akure, the state capital.
The police said the incident, which reportedly left the victim with a serious injury, occurred on June 2, 2026, at about 2:30 p.m.
According to the command, the case was reported to its Gender-Based Violence Unit at the state headquarters in Akure on June 3, prompting detectives to launch an investigation.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, disclosed in a statement issued on Friday that preliminary findings revealed that the suspect allegedly assaulted her husband, Julius Olatunde, during a disagreement at their residence in the Ilado II area along Igbatoro Road, Akure.
He said, “Preliminary findings revealed that the incident occurred on June 2, 2026, at about 2:30 p.m., during a domestic altercation between the suspect and her husband, Olatunde Julius. During the dispute, the suspect allegedly assaulted the victim and used a cutlass to inflict a deep cut on his left hand, causing him severe bodily injury.”
Jimoh stated that the victim was immediately taken for medical treatment, where the severity of the injury was assessed and documented.
The police spokesperson added that investigators obtained statements from both parties and gathered evidence necessary for the prosecution of the case.
“Upon the conclusion of the investigation and the establishment of a prima facie case, the suspect was arrested and subsequently arraigned before a competent court of jurisdiction for prosecution in accordance with the law,” he said.
The command stressed that it regarded domestic violence as a serious offence and would not tolerate acts capable of endangering the safety and well-being of individuals.
“The Ondo State Police Command views all forms of domestic violence as a serious threat to the safety, dignity and well-being of individuals and remains committed to ensuring that perpetrators are held accountable regardless of gender, status or relationship with the victim,” the statement added.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Felix Ohagwu, urged residents to promptly report cases of domestic violence, abuse and other gender-related offences to security agencies for swift intervention.
He also reassured residents of the command’s commitment to ensuring justice through diligent investigation and prosecution of criminal cases.
