No fewer than 30 persons, including eight children, have been killed in a fresh attack by suspected terrorists on Naridon community in Kamaru Ward, Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The assailants were said to have invaded the village at about 11pm on Sunday, opening fire on residents, setting houses ablaze and leaving several others with injuries in what is the latest wave of violence in Southern Kaduna.
The Secretary to the Village Head of Naridon, Dogon Rana, confirmed the incident on Monday, describing it as one of the deadliest attacks the community has witnessed.
According to him, 30 deaths have been confirmed, while at least four injured residents are receiving treatment, warning that the casualty figure could rise due to the severity of their injuries.
Rana said the attackers struck while some residents were still outdoors and others had retired for the night, leaving families devastated and property worth millions of naira destroyed.
He disclosed that one resident lost five children in the attack, with the only surviving child said to be in critical condition. He also revealed that his own residence and several shops were razed during the invasion.
The community leader attributed the high death toll to the absence of a motorable road, saying the poor access delayed emergency response and made it difficult for residents to flee the attackers.
He appealed to the Federal Government, Kaduna State Government and security agencies to strengthen security in the area and urgently construct an access road to the community to prevent further loss of lives.
Another resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, alleged that 22 members of the Rana family were among those killed, adding that the attackers operated for about three hours without any intervention despite the proximity of military formations.
The resident further claimed that only one soldier and four Mobile Police officers had been deployed to the community after the attack.
Efforts to obtain the reaction of the Kaduna State Police Command were unsuccessful, as calls and a text message sent to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, were not responded to as of the time of filing this report.
