The Ondo State Police Command has arrested four persons over the alleged assault of a resident and the circulation of a viral video said to have publicly humiliated the victim on social media.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, disclosed this in a statement on Friday, saying the command had also condemned the growing trend of jungle justice, cyberbullying and the unlawful public parade of suspected offenders.
An image attached to the police statement indicated that the victim was assaulted for allegedly making a fake transfer of N50,000.
According to the police, the victim, identified as Boluwaji Temidayo, reported at the Okuta Elerinla Police Station on Thursday that he was attacked by a group of persons on July 21, 2026.
He alleged that the assailants recorded the incident without his consent before uploading the footage on various social media platforms.
The statement said detectives immediately launched a technology-driven investigation, deploying digital intelligence and forensic tools to identify those involved in both the assault and the online circulation of the video.
The investigation, according to the command, led to the arrest of four suspects identified as Gbemisola Ariyo, Babatunde Eniola, Adams Tobiloba and Fasusi Bunmi.
"The suspects are currently in lawful custody and have made useful confessional statements. Investigation is ongoing to apprehend other accomplices, while all those found culpable will be charged to court," the statement said.
The command warned residents against taking the law into their own hands by assaulting or publicly humiliating persons accused of committing offences, stressing that every suspect is entitled to constitutional rights until proven guilty by a competent court.
It also cautioned members of the public against recording and circulating videos capable of defaming individuals or obstructing police investigations, noting that such actions could attract prosecution under the Cybercrimes Act and other relevant laws.
The Commissioner of Police, Felix Ohagwu, reaffirmed the command's commitment to protecting the rights of residents and ensuring that anyone found violating the law or infringing on the dignity of others would face prosecution.
He urged members of the public to report suspected criminals to the police instead of resorting to mob action or trial by social media, insisting that justice could only be achieved through lawful procedures.
