Gunmen have killed the All Progressives Congress Chairman in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, Ishaq Yunusa, and abducted another occupant of a vehicle along the Itobe–Ochadamu Expressway.
The incident occurred around 5pm on Thursday near Ojuwo Olijo in Ofu Local Government Area, when the assailants reportedly emerged from the bush and opened fire on motorists.
A blue Toyota Corolla was later discovered abandoned on the highway, with Yunusa found dead inside the vehicle.
The other occupant of the car was reportedly dragged into the bush by the attackers, who fled the scene before security operatives arrived.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Afusat, confirmed the incident, saying the command had commenced an investigation and deployed operatives to the area.
She said security personnel were searching the surrounding forest in an effort to rescue the abducted victim and apprehend the perpetrators.
The deceased's remains were subsequently taken to Grimard Hospital, Anyigba, for autopsy, while the Commissioner of Police, Naziru Kankarofi, ordered sustained operations along the affected route.
The police urged residents and motorists using the highway to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities to security agencies.
