Nigerian Army troops, working with the Office of the National Security Adviser Tactical Team, have killed at least 21 Boko Haram/Islamic State West Africa Province terrorists during an operation in Adamawa State.
The operation, carried out in the Kopre Mountain area of Hong Local Government Area, also led to the destruction of the insurgents’ logistics facilities and the recovery of weapons and ammunition.
The troops, operating under Operation Hadin Kai, stormed the terrorist enclave in the early hours of Wednesday following intelligence reports on the activities of the insurgents in the area.
Military authorities said the troops encountered the terrorists twice during the operation, killing more than 21 of them, while several others reportedly escaped with gunshot injuries.
Among the items recovered were AK-47 rifles, magazines and a large quantity of 7.62mm ammunition. Several motorcycles, bicycles and containers filled with petrol were also destroyed during the offensive.
The Acting Military Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force, North-East, Captain Mohammed Goni, said the operation was linked to ongoing efforts to locate and rescue people abducted from Mussa community and the Lassa area.
Goni said the military would sustain intelligence-led operations against terrorist groups in the region, particularly by dismantling their hideouts, disrupting their logistics and rescuing victims of abduction.
He added that search and rescue operations would continue until the remaining abducted persons were found and safely reunited with their families.
The military high command commended the troops and the ONSA Tactical Team for their courage, professionalism and coordination, describing the operation as another demonstration of the security forces’ ability to penetrate difficult terrain and restrict terrorists’ freedom of movement.
