A traditional ruler in Niger State has reportedly been killed by suspected bandits who attacked his palace in Galla, a community under the Borgu Emirate.
The incident, which occurred on Monday, August 24, 2026, has raised fresh concerns over the worsening security situation in parts of the emirate.
The deceased, the Village Head of Galla, was said to have been attacked after allegedly warning suspected bandits against operating in his community.
Sources said the bandits were angered by the monarch’s warning and subsequently stormed his palace, where they reportedly killed him.
The traditional ruler was also said to be a brother of the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi.
The attack has reportedly heightened tension among residents, particularly amid concerns over the growing activities of bandits and other criminal elements in the area.
Confirming that the command was aware of the development, the Niger State Police spokesman, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said he would provide details after obtaining further information.
However, the police spokesman had yet to issue a formal statement on the incident as of the time of filing this report.
The latest attack has renewed calls for stronger security measures to protect traditional institutions and residents in communities affected by banditry across the state.
