The Industrial Training Fund has commenced an eight-week Train-the-Trainer Skills Acquisition Programme for 100 participants in the Federal Capital Territory as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria's technical workforce and reduce reliance on foreign skilled artisans.
Speaking at the inauguration of the programme in Abuja, the Director-General of the ITF, Dr Afiz Oluwatoyin-Ogun, said the initiative would equip participants with internationally recognised certifications and improve the standard of vocational skills across the country.
He explained that the programme, which covers five key trade areas, would be replicated in the six geopolitical zones to expand access to quality technical and vocational training nationwide.
According to the ITF boss, globally certified experts have been engaged to facilitate the training to ensure participants acquire skills that meet international standards.
Oluwatoyin-Ogun said the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly its focus on empowering artisans and promoting skills development for economic growth.
He disclosed that the fund was collaborating with financial institutions and relevant agencies to provide support for beneficiaries after the training, enabling them to establish businesses and become self-reliant.
The Director-General added that participants would enjoy free accommodation, feeding and allowances throughout the eight-week programme, urging them to take full advantage of the opportunity.
The programme's Lead Consultant, Mr Samson Adeosun, said the trainees would receive practical instruction in industrial painting, floor tiling, carpentry, plumbing and bricklaying.
He described technical and vocational education as a key driver of employment, wealth creation and national development, adding that international facilitators were engaged to ensure the training reflected global best practices.
Speaking on behalf of the participants, Mr Muktar Oloriegbe commended the ITF for the initiative, saying it would help curb unemployment, reduce poverty and improve the competence of Nigerian artisans.
He also urged the fund to sustain innovative capacity-building programmes that would strengthen the nation's workforce, promote industrialisation and accelerate economic development.
