The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko branch, has said it will not suspend its ongoing strike until the Ondo State Government fully implements the agreement reached with the union.

The branch chairman, Prof. Boluwaji Oshodi, disclosed this in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday in Akure, noting that the government’s approval of the agreement was only the beginning of the process.

Oshodi said the state government and the university unions had reached an understanding on the implementation of the Federal Government-Union agreement, but added that the union was awaiting concrete action before returning to the classrooms.

“The state government and the union have reached an agreement on the implementation of the FGN-Union agreement. However, we are still waiting for the implementation. That is when the strike will be called off,” he said.

The industrial action involves academic and non-academic unions across the state-owned universities, who are protesting issues including unpaid allowances owed to their members.

The development followed the state government’s announcement on Monday that it had reached an agreement with the striking unions to implement the FGN-Union agreement.

Oshodi described the government’s decision to approve the agreement as a welcome development but maintained that implementation remained the key condition for ending the strike.

The ASUU-AAUA chairman’s position means academic activities at the institution will remain suspended pending the actualisation of the commitments reached between the union and the state government.
