The Borno State Police Command has arraigned five men before a Maiduguri Chief Magistrate Court for allegedly printing and wearing T-shirts inscribed with “Tinubu Must Go.”
The defendants, identified as Baba Aji Gremami, 44; Mustapha Abba Yemen, 28; Abbacha Mohammed Ali, 32; Adam Umar Gubio, 21; and Abdulhamid Mohammed, 21, were arrested in connection with the incident.
According to the First Information Report filed by the State Criminal Investigation Department, the incident occurred on September 25, 2026, at about 11am around the West End Roundabout area of Maiduguri.
The police accused the five men of criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbance, disturbance of public peace and thuggery, citing Sections 60, 78, 79 and 392 of the Borno State Penal Code.
They were subsequently brought before Chief Magistrate Court I in Maiduguri, where all five defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Following their pleas, their lawyers applied for bail. The court, however, adjourned the matter until October 6 for a ruling on the bail applications.
The substantive case has also been fixed for October 26, when proceedings are expected to continue.
Reacting to the arrests and charges, Amnesty International criticised the prosecution of the men, describing their detention as arbitrary and arguing that peaceful political expression through clothing is protected as a fundamental right.
