Benue crisis: Group alleges plot to import foreign fighters ahead of 2027 election

The National Intelligence Watch has called on security agencies to investigate allegations of a plot to bring foreign fighters into Benue State to foment violence ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

The organisation’s chairman, Chief Matthew Apine, raised the concern in a statement, warning that the alleged recruitment of armed groups from Cameroon, Chad and Niger could threaten residents’ safety and undermine the credibility of the electoral process.

The development comes amid a lingering political rift between the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, and Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia.

The group urged security agencies to verify the allegations, identify anyone suspected of planning or sponsoring violence and ensure that those found culpable are prosecuted in accordance with the law.

It also expressed concern that criminal activities could allegedly be exploited to discredit the state government and influence the outcome of the forthcoming governorship election.

Among the claims highlighted in the statement was the alleged involvement of a former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Kawu Baraje, in facilitating contacts with foreign fighters. The statement also mentioned other political figures as purported participants in discussions concerning the alleged plot. The claims were not independently verified.

The organisation called for increased security surveillance in vulnerable communities and urged residents to report credible threats to the appropriate authorities. It also cautioned against spreading unverified information capable of triggering panic or worsening political tensions.

It further urged security agencies to remain professional and impartial, while calling on the Independent National Electoral Commission and other relevant institutions to work towards peaceful and credible elections in 2027. The group stressed that political ambitions must not supersede the protection of lives and property, urging all parties to exercise restraint and resolve their differences through lawful democratic channels.
