FG releases eight months’ salary arrears to SSANU workers after strike threat

The Federal Government has released eight months’ salary arrears owed members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, less than two days after the union threatened an indefinite strike over unresolved payment issues.

The SSANU National President, Mohammed Haruna Ibrahim, confirmed the development on Wednesday, saying the payment followed intervention by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa.

Ibrahim commended the minister for his intervention, noting that the release of the funds had helped prevent a fresh disruption of academic activities in federal universities.

SSANU had issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government after its 56th National Executive Council meeting held at the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. The union demanded the implementation of outstanding provisions of the 2026 agreement with the government.

It had warned that failure to address its demands would lead to a total and indefinite strike without further notice.

The union's demands also included the payment of two months' salaries withheld during its 2022 industrial action, as well as arrears arising from the 25 per cent and 35 per cent salary increases.

While welcoming the latest payment, Ibrahim said some outstanding obligations were yet to be settled.

He urged SSANU members to work with their respective university managements to ensure that the funds were paid promptly and accurately.

The SSANU president further appealed to state governments and governing councils of state-owned universities to ensure full implementation of the agreement, warning that selective or delayed payment could create further tension in the university system.
