OAUSTECH VC, Ologunorisa clocks 60, champions Blue Economy, drives university growth

The Vice-Chancellor of Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa, Ondo State, Prof. Temi Emmanuel Ologunorisa, is marking his 60th birthday on Tuesday, October 20, amid commendations for his contributions to scholarship, environmental research and university development.

Ologunorisa, who also serves as president of the Social Science Academy of Nigeria, has earned recognition for his research in meteorology, climate science, flooding, drought, environmental hazards and sustainable development.

A statement by the university’s Director of Information, Protocol and Public Relations, Paul Adeagbo, described the professor as a distinguished scholar whose academic contributions and leadership have made a significant impact on the university and the wider academic community.

The statement noted that Ologunorisa had been at the forefront of advocacy for Nigeria’s Blue Economy, promoting the sustainable use of marine resources to drive economic diversification, employment generation and climate resilience.

It added that he established the Centre for Blue Economy and Innovation at OAUSTECH, positioning the institution as a hub for research, training, entrepreneurship and policy advocacy on marine resources, aquaculture, coastal management and renewable ocean energy.

The professor’s advocacy also earned him an invitation to the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, where he delivered a keynote address and participated in discussions on integrating the Blue Economy into Nigeria’s national development strategy.

As vice-chancellor, Ologunorisa has overseen the expansion of academic programmes, the establishment of new faculties, departments and centres, and an increase in student enrolment, alongside efforts to improve infrastructure, staff welfare and digital operations.

The statement further praised his leadership style, describing him as a humble and consultative administrator committed to institutional stability, staff unity and student welfare. It also highlighted his contributions to mentoring younger scholars and fostering cordial relationships with traditional rulers and host communities.

Ologunorisa, a native of Akungba-Akoko in Ondo State, is a fellow of the Social Sciences Academy of Nigeria, the Nigerian Association of Hydrological Sciences, the Nigeria Meteorological Society and the Royal Meteorological Society of the United Kingdom.

As he celebrates his diamond jubilee, the university community and other well-wishers have been urged to recognise his contributions to academic development, environmental research and leadership.

A DIAMOND JUBILEE TRIBUTE TO AN ICON OF SCHOLARSHIP, LEADERSHIP AND HUMANITY

By Paul Adeagbo

Today, 20th October, 2026, the drums will roll, the heavens will bear witness, and the academic community will rise in unison to celebrate a man whose life has been a masterclass in impact, integrity and industry – Professor Temi Emmanuel Ologunorisa, the distinguished Vice-Chancellor of Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH), Okitipupa, and President of the Social Sciences Academy of Nigeria.

Sixty years is not just a number; it is a diamond jubilee of grace, grit and greatness. And no one wears this diamond better than Prof. Ologunorisa, the proud son of Akungba-Akoko.

To write about Prof. Ologunorisa is to write about Geography itself. As a Professor of Meteorology and Climate Science, he stands tall as one of Nigeria’s most cited and respected environmental scientists.

A proud Fellow of four distinguished learned societies – Fellow, Social Sciences Academy of Nigeria (FSSAN) which he now leads as President, Fellow, Nigerian Association of Hydrological Sciences (FNAHS), Fellow, Nigeria Meteorological Society (FNMetS), and Fellow, Royal Meteorological Society, UK (FRMetS) – his fellowship is not honorary, it is earned through decades of rigorous research, groundbreaking publications on climate change, flooding, drought, environmental hazards and sustainable development, and mentorship of generations of scholars.

From lecture halls in Nigeria to international conferences in America and beyond, his voice has remained authoritative, clear and solution-driven.

Long before the Blue Economy became a national policy mantra under the present Federal Government, Prof. Ologunorisa had seen the future.

He saw that Nigeria’s 853km coastline and our vast marine resources were not just water, but wealth waiting to be harnessed. At OAUSTECH, a coastal university, he translated vision into institution by establishing the Centre for Blue Economy and Innovation – the first of its kind in a Nigerian public university – as a hub for research, training, entrepreneurship and policy advocacy on marine resources, aquaculture, coastal management, renewable ocean energy and sustainable livelihoods for coastal communities.

His advocacy resonated nationally. He was invited to deliver a keynote address and serve as a panellist at the prestigious National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, where he made a compelling case for Nigeria to mainstream the Blue Economy into its national development strategy for diversification, jobs and climate resilience.

Today, when Nigeria has created a Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, history will remember that Prof. Ologunorisa was one of the earliest academic voices who prepared the intellectual ground.

If scholarship gave him a name, administration gave him a legacy.

As Vice-Chancellor of OAUSTECH, Okitipupa, Prof. Ologunorisa has redefined leadership. Under his watch, the university has witnessed what many describe as a renaissance:

Academic Expansion: Aggressive expansion of programmes and creation of new faculties, departments and centres, including the Centre for Blue Economy and Innovation, positioning OAUSTECH as a truly specialized University of Science and Technology.

Surge in Enrollment: From low enrollment figures to a record-breaking increase in student population, because parents and students now have confidence in the university's stability and quality.

Infrastructural Renewal, Academic Stability, Improved Staff Welfare and Digital Transformation.

He leads with wisdom, not whips; with consultation, not confrontation. Firm yet fatherly, principled yet compassionate. He has united Council, Senate, Congregation, Staff Unions – ASUU, NASU, SSANU, NAAT – and the Student Union in a common purpose: progress.

Beyond the gown and titles is a man of uncommon humility and deep faith.

Prof. Ologunorisa is a family man to the core – a loving husband, a doting father, a loyal son of Akungba-Akoko who has become a beloved adopted son of Okitipupa. He is a devout Christian whose life is anchored on prayer, integrity and service.

Those who know him speak of his open-door policy, his generosity of spirit, his willingness to listen to the messenger and the gateman with the same attention he gives to a Governor or a Monarch. He remembers names, he celebrates people, and he lifts others genuinely.

That is why Traditional Rulers – from the Olugbo of Ugbo Kingdom to the Abodi of Ikale Land, the Chairman of this occasion, from Kalasuwe to Jegun – hold him in high esteem.

At 60, Prof. Temi Emmanuel Ologunorisa has lived a life of impact. He has taught, he has researched, he has led, he has built, and he has seen tomorrow.

As OAUSTECH celebrates you, as Ondo State celebrates you, as Nigeria celebrates you, we celebrate not just your age, but your essence – excellence without arrogance, power without pride, and vision without bounds.

Congratulations, Sir!

May your new decade be even more glorious. May God grant you longer life in sound health, greater wisdom, and higher honours.

Happy Diamond Jubilee, Prof!

Long live the Vice-Chancellor!

Long live the President, Social Science Academy of Nigeria!

Long live Prof. Temi Emmanuel Ologunorisa @ 60!
