The Michael and Cecilia Ibru University, Delta State, has asked its Pro-Chancellor, Anthony Kila, to step aside while the institution investigates questions surrounding his professorial credentials.
The university announced the decision on Tuesday, following reports that raised concerns over the basis of Kila’s claim to the title of professor.
The institution said the move was taken to safeguard academic integrity and ensure transparency in its governance, adding that the investigation would determine the facts surrounding the matter.
The university also said Kila’s temporary withdrawal from his duties was necessary to preserve public confidence among students, staff, parents, regulators and other stakeholders.
The controversy followed an investigation which reportedly found no evidence that a recognised academic institution had formally awarded Kila the rank of professor.
Kila had reportedly stated that the European Centre for Advanced and Professional Studies, which he said was based in Cambridge, United Kingdom, conferred the professorship on him in 2016.
However, checks cited in the investigation reportedly found no record of the institution in relevant UK and Nigerian corporate databases. Questions were also raised over his use of the designation “Jean Monnet Professor of Strategy and Development.”
Kila has rejected the description of him as a “fake professor”, insisting that he remains a professor and is willing to provide documents supporting his academic credentials.
The university has not stated how long its investigation will last.
