Police hunt killers of woman lured to village over Afang leaves

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has launched a manhunt for the killers of a woman, Unwana Okon, who was allegedly tricked into visiting a village in Oruk Anam Local Government Area, where she was murdered.

Okon, a resident of Ndot Village, was reportedly invited to Mbiaikot Village by an unidentified caller on the pretext of purchasing Afang leaves, but she was later found dead.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, disclosed the incident in a statement issued in Uyo on Sunday, adding that the victim’s brother, identified as Eno, reported the matter to the police at about 3.30pm on November 1, 2026.

According to the police, Eno told investigators that his sister had received a telephone call from an unknown person who asked her to come to Mbiaikot Village to sell Afang leaves.

The police said Okon honoured the invitation but was subsequently killed by her assailants, who allegedly took her mobile phone and an undisclosed amount of money.

The Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the murder, directing that the case be transferred from the divisional police headquarters to the command’s Violence Crime Response Unit for specialised investigation.

John said the move was aimed at ensuring the identification and arrest of those behind the killing, as well as their prosecution.

The command condemned the murder and urged residents of Oruk Anam and neighbouring communities to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements or credible information that could help the police track down the perpetrators.
