A critical review on this topic CONTRIBUTION OF JOURNALIST TO COVID-19 CASE IN NIGERIA AND OUTSIDE THE COUNTRY it can also be best described as "THE IMPACT OF MEDIA ON THE NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL PANDEMIC"
Impact- contribution
Media-journalists
National and international - Nigeria and outside
Pademic - covid-19
The world only appreciate the HEALTH WORKERS for working daily towards acquiring cure for covid-19 and neglecting the part of appreciating the MEDIA for preventing the pandemic from spreading, forgetting the world most precious quotes that "PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE", During the course of this on going pandemic the media has played a vital role in performing their major duties, which clearly state the true definition of journalism, which is to EDUCATE, ENTERTAIN, INFORM and lot more.
During this on going pandemic journalism as a whole (PRINT AND BROADCAST JOURNALISM) had ensure to be more effective and efficient in creating
Awareness and Enlightenment(about Precautionary measures), to fight against this pandemic called COVID-19.
CONTRIBUTION OF JOURNALIST TO COVID-19 CASE IN NIGERIA AND OUTSIDE THE COUNTRY
Backing this up with a THEORY (Communication Theory), I will like to make use of SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES THEORY
social Responsibilities theory state clearly the efficiency of journalism and its impact to the people (Readers and listening)
The theory helped in creating professionalism in media stating clearly that the media is socially responsible to the public in any state Home or Abroad, in giving Credible (Truthful and Accurate) information to the public, and also ensuring instant feed back(I.e people's opinions).
-Journalist reportage on the pandemic provides important information to the public, in order to ensure the people are fully aware of how the virus has destroyed the life of patriotic citizens in Nigeria and the world at large.
-The media further ensure they Enlightened the public about Precautionary measures to take during the period of this pandemic like washing of hands, use of nose mask, social distancing, so as to reduce the spread of the Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19) which was achieved through pamphlet, posters, newspaper articles and advertisements on radio and television messages, and social media.
LET'S TALK ABOUT MISINFORMATION
Misinformation has made 60% of Nigerians today, have less or no believe in the existence of this PANDEMIC.
Listening to various information ravaging the social media about the case of COVID-19 with various figures, it will be hard to believe in existence of the pandemic, but daily updates provided through various media(Journalist) had helped in curtailing RUMORS and FAKE NEWS on COVID-19 because the people believed so much in journalism as a profession for CREDIBLE SOURCES FOR VITAL INFORMATION.
Though, Reportage on social medial can be easily MANIPULATED, Instances such as COVID-19 would affects the mass population and caused a diminishing emotional responsiveness to a the deadly disease affecting all aspects of life which could probably leads to more complex preventive measure than the current ones we're experiencing if Misinformation is not curtailed.
CURTAINING MISINFORMATION ;
Journalist reports on the pandemic provides important information to the public ( i.e live update of the pandemic, people newly affected, discharge, and death), and in turn, induce positive healthy behaviour practices (i.e., washing of hands, use of nose mask, social distancing) in the individuals, that will reduce the probability of contacting the disease from an affected individual. This was achieved through informative literature (i.e., pamphlets), posters, newspaper articles and advertisements, radio and television messages, and social media outlets (i.e., twitter, facebook) are used daily to inform the public on current health issues.
Misinformation is usually financially motivated, and involves practices such as using fake accounts or buying “likes” to boost posts. Here the issue is finding and removing suspect content because it violates policies. Journalists are key to countering the “dangerous outbreak of misinformation” accompanying the COVID-19 pandemic, the UN Secretary-General said during a virtual dialogue on promoting press freedom amid the global crisis.
Thanks to the journalist for always being there to provide legit pervasive information to curtail issues, not only on COVID-19 but also it's likes.Lack of journalist evidence of fake news report on social problems such as COVID-19 would affects the mass population and caused a diminishing emotional responsiveness to a the deadly disease affecting all aspects of life which could probably be more complex If people continue to source for vital information on social medias without credibility.
I still remain my humble self DAMILOLA MARTINS
