Exactly a week after a lawn mower was donated to Oroke High School Akungba by her 1974-79 Alumni Class, the President of the Set , Chief Alaba Yusuf, the Akinrogun of Akungba Akoko, and another classmate, US-based Dr. Sunday Olotu, delivered a reflective fluorescent steel signage to the grossly run down college, unlike the one they left 41 years ago.
The appalling state of infrastructural amenities in the school is so worrisome, as classes are collapsing due to uncontrolled gully erosion and lack of financial muscle by the school management to repair dilapidated buildings and other amenities.
"Sometime ago, our students used to suffer snake bite as a result of bushy environment. Now we have a mower, all thanks to Class 79.
"Many buildings have been destroyed by erosion and inclement weather. At the moment, we have shortage of classrooms. Even the ones we have are not conducive for learning, hence we are soliciting help from our old students. Because government cannot do it all," said the School Principal Mrs
Adekemi Akinnawo, herself a member of Oroke 1980 Class.
She spoke further on the brand new signpost presented by Chief Muyiwa Otunyemi, the Oloyofin of Okele Quarter Akungba, on behalf of the donors, Chief Alaba Yusuf and Dr. Olotu, thus:
"I want to appreciate Chief Alaba Yusuf and Dr. Dr. Olotu for donating to us a befitting signpost, on behalf of the 1974-79 Set. May the Lord continue to uplift them and their colleagues in their various endeavours. The signpost is so vital, because the school had no directional signage since the old one there was crushed by a misguided truck a long time ago."
The concerned headteacher also noted that the road linking the main road to the school is in very deplorable condition, as erosion has eaten up by the school fences, which are now death traps. Suspected herdsmen and other intruders also tresspass into the college, creating fear in the minds of staff and students.
On his own part, a joyous Senior Prefect of the school, Master Olaosebikan Nobel described the signboard gesture as the first of its kind since he came into the School.
"It is a great privilege to have this beffitting signpost, because it will help strangers to locate our school easily. On behalf of the students of Oroke High School, I say a big thank you to the donors. Now we can proudly take photographs with our School's signboard, especially after our final year WASCE examination."
Also, the Chairman of Parent Teachers Association (PTA), Mr. Tunde Olootu, hailed the donors for extending hands of generosity to their Alma Mater. He described the signpost as another positive feat for the school.
In his reaction, the representative of the Alale of Akungba, HRM Oba Isaac Sunday Adeyeye, Paramount Ruler of Akungba land, the Oloyofin of Oyofin, Chief Muyiwa Otunyemi, thanked the donors for deeming it fit to giving back to their roots, to improve the welfare and wellbeing of their former school.
"On behalf of Alale of Akungba land, Oba Isacc Sunday Adeyeye, Ajimo III, I appreciate Chief Alaba Yusuf and Dr. Olotu for the signpost donated to the school, I am also using this medium to call on well-meaning old students to join hands with others to elevate the college", he said.
