No fewer than eight people have been crushed to death near Adelunle Ajasin University in Akungba, Akoko South West Local Government Area of Ondo State.
It was reliably gathered that a truck owned by a billionaire cement magnate, conveying tons of cement lost control while navigating the hilly slope from Ikare towards Owo road.
Similarly, on 31 October 2020 a trailer killed over 20 persons at Ibaka market on the same route. Several other road mishaps occurred in Akungba last, involving heavy laden articulated vehicles.
The State Governor Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu last year visited the university town and set up a committee to curb incessant road tragedies in the hitherto serene community.
That Committee Report is yet to see the light of day before the latest two fatal accidents, which claimed lives and destroyed precious property.
Concerned indigenes of the town, led by HRM Oba Isaac Sunday Adeyeye Ajimo III, the Alale of Akungba Akoko, have proferred a preferred solution, which is the construction of a 20 kilometre bypass through the plain land between Akungba and Epinmi, to divert heavy trucks traffic from Ikare and Oka hills while commuting from Abuja to Lagos.
Agitated youths are now urging the State and Federal Governments to intervene immediately to avert communal protest.
