No fewer than 90 widows have been empowered by a non-governmental organization, Akinbowale Ogbonlaye Foundation (AOF), in Akungba-Akoko in the Akoko South West Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The programme which was held on Friday at Holy Trinity Anglican Church Pavilion was themed: 'Widows In Need Project'.
The widows drawn from all the quarters in the University community, at the wee hours of today, were given bags of rice and cash gift in the spirit of Christmas.
Speaking at the eye-catching programme, the founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Foundation, Ogbonlaye Akinbowale, said the humanitarian gesture was part of his humongous efforts to put smile on the faces of desolate widows.
Ogbonlaye who is a renowned business man and bureaucrat, noted that the timely donation would go a long way to mitigate the financial burden on the beneficiaries.
He added that the extant economic downturn coupled with its attendant effects and other multifaceted challenges frontally bedeviling the denizens have dashed the hope of the youths trying to make a significant change.
Ogbonlaye who urged others whose means are plenty, advised that having constant touch with widows would reinvigorate their hope for survival, adding that plans are afoot to shore up the living conditions of the downtrodden.
The Project Manager of the foundation, Mr. Oladapo Olawale, pointed out that the donation was coming after earlier series of empowerment by the foundation, maintaining that the empowerment was a means of catering for the aged.
However, a beneficiary who simply identified herself as Racheal, thanked Ogbonlaye for lending a helping hand during the festive season.
“May God continue to be with you”, Racheal prayed.
