The National Tuberculosis, Leprosy and Buruli Ulcer Control Programme (NTBLCP) of the Federal Ministry of Health has conferred on the Ondo State Tuberculosis, Leprosy and Buruli Ulcer Control Programme of the State Ministry of Health two prestigious awards for being the best in Genexpert Utilization and Improving Tuberculosis case finding by 35 per cent and above in the preceding year.
Presenting the award to the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Banji Awolowo Ajaka during the end of the year ceremony and sent-forth party organized for retired officers in the ministry, the Permanent Secretary, the state Ministry of Health, Pharmacist Folukemi Aladenola, congratulated the entire staff of the Ministry, Department of Public Health and the TBL Unit for the great work they had done.
Aladenola urged them not to rest on their oars, adding that reward for hard work was more work.
In his remarks, the Programme Manager for the State Tuberculosis, Leprosy and Buruli Ulcer Control Programme, Dr. Oluwafemi Aina, explained that the awards were for Key Performance Indicators for Quarter 1 to Quarter 3 in 2022 in comparison with 2021.
“ The Diagnosis of Tuberculosis is currently either by clinical methods or bacteriologic [laboratory] investigations.
“For bacteriologic diagnosis, which is the more accurate, Genexpert is one of molecular rapid diagnostic techniques recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) which the State currently employs effectively for diagnosing tuberculosis,” he said.
According to the programme manager, the state currently notifies close to 900 cases of TB every quarter as against the initial 500 cases quarterly notification last year
Aina also explained that as at today Ondo state equally notifies as much as 5 cases of leprosy every quarter despite the minimal support received for the continued case detection activities on the disease.
Other awards presented to the Hon. Commissioner were the MOH Football team award, who won the only premiership league in Akure, highest goal scorer award, player maker of the entire tournament, and the best goal keeper of the tournament.
A cash reward of 120,000 was given to the team.
