The Medical Department of the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) Effurun, Delta State, joined their professional colleagues on Monday, 13th May 2024, to celebrate International Nurses Week.
The event, organized at the Lecture Theatre with the theme "Our Nurses, Our Future: The Economic Power of Care," was well attended by top management staff of the Institute and other invited guests who added color and candor to the week-long celebration.
The Principal/Chief Executive Officer of PTI, Engr. Dr. Samuel E. Onoji, the Special Guest of Honor, highlighted the importance of mental health and the role of nurses in maintaining and improving the health of the PTI community and humanity in general in his opening speech. Describing nurses as the backbone of the medical profession, Dr. Onoji stressed that nurses are the ones who practically manage hospitals and administer drugs recommended by doctors for the well-being of humanity.
Engr. Dr. Onoji ordered a standing ovation to honor the nurses on their special day and promised to look into requests made by Mrs. Comfort Useh in her welcome address, particularly the installation of solar power panels to improve service delivery in the Medical Department in line with global best practices.
The highlight of the event was a comprehensive presentation by the guest speaker, Eric Oniovosa Obaro, a registered nurse specializing in psychiatry. Obaro provided valuable insights and practical advice on managing stress and improving mental well-being through dietary choices and lifestyle changes.
Mr. Eric Oniovosa exposed the dangers associated with the uncontrolled intake of psychoactive substances (drug abuse) and recommended drastically reducing alcohol intake, quitting smoking, and total abstinence from drinking and driving, which he identified as a dangerous killer syndrome.
The PTI Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Solomon Oru, and the Head Nurse, Mrs. Comfort Useh, who were the hosts, thanked the Principal/CEO for his cooperation and support in their welcome addresses. They noted that the economic power of care creates healthy people and societies, driving healthy economies.
According to them, the theme of the 2024 International Nurses Week aims to reshape negative perceptions and demonstrate how strategic planning and investment in nursing can bring considerable economic benefits.
Other activities lined up for the event included free health check-ups for attendees, such as Body Mass Index (BMI) measurements, blood pressure (BP) checks, and sugar tests. These services were well-received by participants, reflecting PTI's commitment to fostering a healthy community.
The 2024 International Nurses Week at PTI was a resounding success, bringing together healthcare professionals, students, and community members to engage in meaningful discussions and activities centered around mental health and wellness.
Dr. Ogbonna Ikenna concluded the event with a vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all participants and organizers for their efforts in making the International Nurses Week a success. Dr. Ikenna also emphasized the ongoing need for mental health education and support within the PTI community.
