Dr Daniel Akintunde-Alo, a Forester from the Department of Forest Production and Products, University of Ibadan, has urged all stakeholders to work towards reducing the effects of climate change, pollution, and deforestation in Nigeria.
Akintunde-Alo made the call on Wednesday during the World Environment Day celebration organised by the The Initiative for Biodiversity Conservation in Sub-Saharan Africa (IBCSSA), held at Oba Akinbiyi Model College, Ibadan.
The Forester remarked that ecosystem restoration involves all and sundry, assisting in the recovery of ecosystems that have been degraded, damaged, or destroyed.
He highlighted the forms of restoration as :
reforestation and afforestation, cleaning up Rivers and Oceans, practicing sustainable agriculture and urban greening.
Akintunde-Alo advised all and sundry to minimize waste by following the three Rs. World Environment Day reminds, saying everyone has a role to play in protecting the planet.
"By working together, we can restore our ecosystems, combat climate change, and preserve biodiversity.
"Also, government should enforce policies which will embrace restoration of our degraded environment.
"Biodiversity is essential for the stability and health of our ecosystems. Each species, no matter how small, plays a crucial role in maintaining the balance of nature, the environment directly affects our health and well-being," he said.
According to him, the theme for this year's Environment Day “Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience “, emphasizes the urgent need to revive damaged ecosystems and protect and sustain them for the future.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event was celebrated with a tree planting exercise.
The Students were educated on the importance of trees and they also participated in planting tree saplings. (NAN)
