The media office of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has strongly denied reports claiming he attended a meeting where he allegedly rejected calls to step down for a southern candidate ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Atiku’s team described the report as "a malicious fabrication" and dismissed it as a propaganda tool designed by the Tinubu-led All Progressives Congress (APC) to create division within the opposition.
“There was no such meeting. Atiku Abubakar was never in attendance. The entire story is pure fiction, cooked up in the propaganda kitchens of the Tinubu-led APC regime,” the statement said.
Labeling the claim as “laughably desperate,” the former vice president’s camp accused the APC of attempting to distract Nigerians from the growing support being enjoyed by the opposition coalition and the recent adoption of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its political platform.
The statement reiterated that the opposition remains united and committed to what it described as a mission to rescue the country from what it called a “rudderless government.”
“No amount of propaganda, planted stories, or faceless briefings will fracture the resolve of the opposition coalition,” it said.
The Atiku Media Office further stated that the momentum behind the ADC was a clear indication that Nigerians are seeking an alternative to the current administration, insisting that the ruling party is “living on borrowed time.”
The statement concluded by urging the public and the media to disregard the reports, stressing that the alleged meeting was neither credible nor attributed to any verifiable source.
Atiku, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has remained a key figure in the opposition's moves to form a coalition ahead of the 2027 polls.
