The Congress of University Academics (CONUA) has dismissed reports claiming it joined the ongoing university strike, insisting that its members are not part of any industrial action.
In a statement signed by its National President, Dr. Niyi Sunmonu, the union described the reports as false and misleading, saying they were aimed at creating unnecessary confusion within the academic community and among students.
“CONUA has not declared any strike action and is not part of any ongoing strike,” the statement read. “Our members are urged to continue performing their academic and administrative duties diligently — to report to work, engage with students, and carry out their professional responsibilities as expected.”
The union said it remains committed to academic stability, excellence, and constructive engagement with the government and relevant stakeholders to advance Nigeria’s higher education system.
It explained that CONUA has no reason to embark on a strike since its issues with the Federal Government are already being addressed.
The statement recalled that after the union protested its exclusion from the renegotiation committee of the 2009 Agreement last year, the Minister of Education met with its leadership on September 11, 2025, and assured that the Yayale Ahmed Committee would be expanded to include all academic unions.
“Following the meeting, the committee has been expanded as promised,” CONUA noted.
“Until any of the issues presented by CONUA to the Federal Government become subjects of dispute, there is no foundation whatsoever for any strike action by our union.”
The union said its nationwide congresses held between September 18 and 24 reaffirmed members’ commitment to dialogue rather than disruption, describing engagement as “the best path forward for the Nigerian university system.”
While calling on Vice Chancellors to ensure the safety and protection of its members across campuses, CONUA appealed to students to remain focused on their studies, assuring that the union remains dedicated to peace, stability, and the progress of Nigeria’s universities.
