The Principal of Ijapo High School, Akure, Dr. (Mrs.) Fadekemi Jogbodo (PhD), has charged the newly elected prefects of the school to see leadership as a call to service anchored on responsibility and integrity, rather than titles or positions.
She gave the charge during the swearing-in ceremony of 38 new prefects and the formal induction of 410 newly admitted JSS 1 students held at the school premises in Akure.
The oath of allegiance was administered by Barr. Segun Oni, who urged the new student leaders to uphold the tenets of discipline and dedication that have defined Ijapo High School over the years.
The prefects were later decorated by the Principal, Heads of Departments, executives of the Parents-Teachers Association (PTA), and members of the Old Students Association.
Dr. Jogbodo, who also serves as the President of the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), Ondo State chapter, called on the prefects to lead by example and embody the core values of the school — discipline, diligence, honesty, and commitment.
“It is with great joy and a deep sense of pride that I stand before you today to witness the swearing-in of the newly elected prefects of Ijapo High School,” she said.
She noted that the event marked an important milestone not only in the lives of the student leaders but also in the continuous pursuit of excellence that defines the institution.
“Dear prefects, as you take your oaths today, remember that leadership begins with example. Your words, your actions, your punctuality, and your conduct will be watched and often imitated by others.”
Dr. Jogbodo charged the prefects to be leaders who inspire rather than intimidate, adding that true leadership is built on humility, empathy, and fairness.
She also appealed to all students to cooperate with the prefects in building a united and excellent school community, while commending teachers and administrators for their dedication in molding future leaders.
The colourful event also featured the annual “Walk-In” ceremony, during which the 410 newly admitted JSS 1 students were formally welcomed into the Ijapo family. The new students, accompanied by teachers and senior students, joyfully marched from Ijapo Gate to the school compound in a lively procession filled with songs and cheers.
In her “Walk-In” address, Dr. Jogbodo warmly welcomed the new students, describing the day as the beginning of a transformative journey of discovery, growth, and excellence.
She said the ceremony symbolised “an official entrance into the great family of Ijapo High School — a place where excellence, discipline, and character are nurtured together.”
Dr. Jogbodo urged the students to embrace responsibility, focus, and hard work, reminding them that every child is a star waiting to shine. She cautioned them to avoid bad company, respect elders, and always do what is right even when no one is watching.
She also appreciated parents for their continuous trust and partnership, assuring them of the school’s commitment to nurturing their wards intellectually, morally, and socially.
In his goodwill message, the President of the Old Students Association, Engr. Ojo Felix, encouraged the students to take their studies seriously, stressing that their future success depends on their commitment and discipline.
