Ikare-Akoko, the headquarters of Akoko North-East Local Government Area of Ondo State, was agog at the weekend as a prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Afolabi Momoh, declared his ambition to contest for the Ondo North Senatorial seat.
The colourful declaration, held at Momoh’s country home in Ekan, attracted party stalwarts, community leaders, and hundreds of defectors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who publicly joined the APC.
Speaking at the event, Momoh said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had earned the trust and support of Nigerians through his bold economic reforms and infrastructure drive, noting that such achievements would guarantee him a smooth re-election in 2027.
“Naira is coming back gradually and if you can see, prices of food items have reduced unlike before. Looking at the infrastructural development among other vital areas, Tinubu deserves re-election,” Momoh said.
He explained that his decision to run for Senate was driven by the need to end the hardship faced by people in Ondo North, lamenting that the area had been neglected for too long.
“People are really suffering in Ondo North Senatorial District. No employment, nothing like life-changing initiatives and programmes for the constituents. We can’t continue this way,” he added.
A pioneer member of the APC in Ondo State, Chief Ekunusi Momodu, described Momoh as a compassionate and selfless leader whose generosity reflects that of his late father.
He said the crowd of supporters at the declaration showed the people’s confidence in his leadership.
Similarly, a former Chairman of Akoko North-East, Pastor Arowolo Oluwole, said Momoh’s declaration was a rallying point for Tinubu’s re-election in the district, recalling that his late father’s goodwill and philanthropy had endeared the family to the people.
Also speaking, a Special Assistant to the Minister of Interior on Women Affairs, Hon. Atinuke Akadri, said the people of Ondo North had long awaited a leader with Momoh’s compassion and sense of service.
“We’ve been waiting for who will rescue us from this long suffering and at last we found one,” she said.
The event ended with chants of solidarity and renewed optimism as residents of Ikare pledged support for both President Tinubu and Momoh ahead of the 2027 general elections.
