The National Council of State has endorsed Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) from Kogi State as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
This was contained in a statement issued on Thursday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had earlier presented Amupitan’s name to the Council during its meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, to succeed Professor Mahmood Yakubu, whose tenure came to an end in October 2025 after a decade in office.
The President described the nominee as a seasoned academic and legal professional, noting that he is the first person from Kogi in the North Central region to be put forward for the role.
Council members unanimously backed Tinubu’s nomination, with Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, commending Amupitan as a man of character and integrity.
In line with constitutional requirements, the President will transmit Amupitan’s name to the Senate for confirmation.
Aged 58, Amupitan is a Professor of Law and currently serves as Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration) at the University of Jos. He also chairs the Governing Council of Joseph Ayo Babalola University in Osun State.
A Senior Advocate of Nigeria since 2014, he is widely respected for his expertise in Company Law, Corporate Governance, and the Law of Evidence. Over the years, he has authored several legal publications and served in key academic and administrative capacities, including Dean of the Faculty of Law and Chairman of the Committee of Deans and Directors at the University of Jos.
He hails from Ayetoro Gbede in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State and is married with four children.
