e Chairman of Owo Local Government Area in Ondo State, Hon. Tope Omolayo, has been suspended indefinitely by the Legislative Council over allegations of gross misconduct.
The resolution, which took effect immediately, was reached during a plenary session of the council held on Tuesday under the leadership of the House Leader, Hon. Doyin Adebayo. The decision reportedly received the backing of a two-thirds majority of the eleven councillors.
According to the lawmakers, the suspension was aimed at promoting accountability and good governance within the local government. They accused Omolayo of financial improprieties, disregard for statutory budget and internally generated revenue regulations, disrespect toward traditional rulers, and failure to conduct himself in a manner befitting his office.
In a statement endorsed by the councillors, they noted that “the allegations against Hon. Omolayo are serious and require thorough investigation.” The council also assured residents that the probe would be conducted “in a fair, transparent, and impartial manner.”
Following the suspension, the Vice Chairman, Hon. Hamed Ibrahim, has been directed to assume office as Acting Chairman pending the conclusion of the investigation. The Head of Local Government Administration has also been instructed to make necessary changes to the council’s bank signatories to reflect the new arrangement.
All government properties in Omolayo’s possession are to be handed over to the Head of Local Government Administration.
The council urged residents of Owo Local Government Area to remain calm, assuring them of its commitment to transparency, accountability, and effective service delivery.
