President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday announced a national security emergency and ordered a major expansion of the country’s security workforce in response to escalating violence nationwide.
A statement from the Presidency revealed that the president directed the Nigeria Police Force to enlist 20,000 additional officers, raising the total number of new recruits approved under his administration to 50,000.
Tinubu further instructed that National Youth Service Corps orientation camps be used as temporary training centres to fast-track the preparation of fresh personnel.
The move follows heightened public concern over rising kidnappings, bandit attacks and armed violence in several parts of the country.
Security analysts have long noted that Nigeria’s policing capacity is overstretched, with manpower falling short of the population’s security needs.
Officials say the new directive is expected to strengthen frontline operations once the officers complete training and are deployed across states.
The Presidency added that more measures aimed at reinforcing national security will be outlined soon.
