A Japanese company, Science, has launched a human washing machine in Japan following its debut at the World Expo in Osaka.
The device allows users to lie inside a pod, close the lid, and be cleaned automatically, similar to clothes in a washing machine, though without spinning.
It also plays music and monitors heartbeats and other vital signs during the process.
The prototype, dubbed the human washer of the future, drew long queues at the six-month Expo, which concluded in October with more than 27 million visitors.
“Our president was inspired by that as a 10-year-old boy,” Maekura told AFP.
“The machine not only washes your body but also your soul.”
Interest in the device grew internationally after a US resort company contacted Science about commercialising it, prompting the firm to start producing units for sale.
The first machine was purchased by a hotel in Osaka, with other buyers including major electronics retailer Yamada Denki.
Due to its uniqueness, Science plans to make only about 50 units, with a retail price set at 60 million yen (around $385,000).
