The Ondo State Government has commenced the payment of over N350 million as bursary and scholarship awards to more than 11,000 indigenes of the state studying in different tertiary institutions across the country.
The flag-off ceremony, held on Tuesday in Akure, was described by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa as a deliberate step toward reducing the financial pressure on students and their parents while encouraging academic excellence.
Represented by his deputy, Dr. Olayide Adelami, the governor said the initiative demonstrates his administration’s firm commitment to education and human capital growth.
According to him, the bursary and scholarship programme for 11,358 beneficiaries shows government’s deep concern for students’ welfare. He added that his administration would continue to implement policies that ensure no student is deprived of education due to lack of funds.
He urged the beneficiaries to embrace discipline, diligence and integrity, noting that the state is determined to strengthen the education system and support every student to succeed.
Administrative Secretary of the State Scholarship Board, Mrs. Funso Omoniyi, explained that the scheme covers five categories—scholarship for outstanding students, assistance for law school and medical students, and support for physically challenged students.
Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun, disclosed that the government has also released funds for other educational initiatives, including payment of WASSCE registration fees.
The National President of the National Association of Ondo State Students (NAOSS), Temitope Alade, praised the governor’s commitment to students’ welfare and called on his colleagues to remain of good conduct in their various schools.
Dignitaries at the event included the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Taiwo Fasoranti; APC Chairman, Engr. Ade Adetimehin; Head of Service, Mr. Bayo Philip; Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Dr. Seun Osemaye; and Special Adviser on Health, Prof. Simidele Odimayo.
