The Supreme Court has upheld the constitutional powers of the President to declare a state of emergency in any part of the country to prevent a breakdown of law and order.
The apex court also affirmed the authority of the President to suspend elected officials for a specified period under emergency rule.
The decision followed a suit instituted by Adamawa State alongside 10 other Peoples Democratic Party-led states challenging the emergency rule imposed in Rivers State.
The PDP-controlled states had questioned the legality of the emergency declaration made by President Bola Tinubu in March.
Tinubu had, during the declaration, suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy and members of the State House of Assembly for six months.
In dismissing the suit, the Supreme Court ruled that the President acted within the bounds of the Constitution.
