President Bola Tinubu has nominated former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, as the next Minister of Defence.
The nomination letter, addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, proposes General Musa as the replacement for Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, who resigned on Monday.
General Musa, aged 58, served as Chief of Defence Staff from 2023 until October 2025.
He is a recipient of the Colin Powell Award for Soldiering, which he won in 2012.
Born in Sokoto in 1967, General Musa completed his primary and secondary schooling locally before attending the College of Advanced Studies in Zaria.
In 1986 he joined the Nigerian Defence Academy and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1991.
He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 1991 and over the years has held significant positions including General Staff Officer 1 at HQ 81 Division, Commanding Officer of 73 Battalion, and Assistant Director in the Department of Army Policy and Plans.
He also served as the Infantry Corps training representative at the Army Armour Corps headquarters.
In 2019, General Musa held leadership roles as Deputy Chief of Staff, Training/Operations at the Infantry Centre, and Commander of Sector 3 in both Operation Lafiya Dole and the Multinational Joint Task Force in the Lake Chad region.
Two years later, he became Theatre Commander for Operation Hadin Kai before rising to head the Nigerian Army Infantry Corps, culminating in his appointment as CDS in 2023.
In the nomination letter, President Tinubu expressed confidence that General Musa will bring capable leadership to the Ministry of Defence and help reinforce Nigeria’s security architecture under his watch.
