The Federal Government has ordered compulsory drug testing for all applicants seeking employment in the federal public service.
The directive was contained in a statement issued by the Director of Information and Public Relations at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Segun Imohiosen.
According to the statement, the policy is part of efforts to curb the rising incidence of drug abuse and its negative effects on productivity, public safety and national security.
Permanent secretaries and heads of ministries, departments and agencies, including extra-ministerial departments and parastatals, were directed to integrate drug screening into their recruitment processes.
The statement added that MDAs are to collaborate with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency to conduct the tests in line with approved standards.
The government expressed concern over the growing rate of substance abuse, particularly among young Nigerians, warning that it poses risks to public health, workplace efficiency and socio-economic development.
“This move aligns with ongoing anti-drug initiatives, including recent policies for mandatory testing in universities and other sectors,” the statement said.
