A video shared by Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Allwell Ademola, hours before her death has triggered an outpouring of grief across the Nigerian entertainment industry and social media.
The clip, posted on her Instagram page less than 24 hours before she was reported dead on Saturday, showed the 43-year-old actress singing a prayerful song centred on hope and survival through the year. The lyrics, now haunting to many of her followers, declared: “In the name of Jesus, I will see the end of this year; this year will not see my end.”
What initially appeared to be a reflective end-of-year post has since taken on a sombre meaning, transforming into a digital tribute as fans, friends and colleagues flooded the comment section with shock, disbelief and prayers.
Several colleagues, including actress Kemi Apesin, publicly appealed to Ademola to respond to calls or messages, expressing hope that the news of her death was untrue. Others dwelt on the painful irony of her passing coming just days before the end of the year.
Reacting to the post, a user identified as bun_mmie wrote, “See the song she sang not even up to 24hrs, as if she knew.. Ah God.” Another follower, Iamii_royale, said, “To think the last song on her last post was ‘I will see the end of this year.’”
Missbehwarjy added, “It’s barely 24 hours since her last post. My God! What is this life!” while toyin_moni commented, “I don’t want to believe this oooo… I commented on your post yesterday evening before going to bed, so it’s not true… You can’t die. Ha! No, now. How?”
Veracity News had reported that Ademola reportedly suffered a heart attack at her residence and was rushed to the hospital, where she was confirmed dead.
Since the news broke, prominent figures in the industry, including Fathia Balogun, Mide Martins and Bidemi Kosoko, have taken to social media to mourn the late actress, paying glowing tributes to her talent and impact in Nollywood.
